1865
The last important battle of the Civil War is fought at Five Forks, a strategic crossroads outside Petersburg, Virginia. Union General Philip H. Sheridan decisively defeats the Confederates under General George E. Pickett, threatening Robert E. Lee’s last supply line, the South Side Railroad. The loss of Five Forks would lead to the fall of Petersburg, the capture of Richmond, and the surrender of Lee's army at Appomattox Court House.

The Petersburg National Military Park would be established in 1926 to preserve the setting of the longest siege in American history. In 1962 the park would be reclassified as a national battlefield.
