| 1969 Dwight D. Eisenhower, the 34th president of the United States dies in Washington, DC, at the age of 78. In 1961, he had retired to his Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, farm with his wife, Mamie Doud Eisenhower. During his presidency, President and Mrs. Eisenhower used the farm as a weekend retreat, a refuge in time of illness, and a comfortable meeting place for world leaders. In 1967, President and Mrs. Eisenhower had deeded their farm to the
United States to be administered by the National Park Service as the Eisenhower
National Historic Site. |
