MARCH 18

1918
The Mormons convince President Woodrow Wilson to rename Utah's Mukuntuweap National Monument (originally established in 1909) as Zion National Monument. The following year it would be declared Zion National Park.

Mukuntuweap had been a name originally given to the area by the Paiute people. The name "Zion" means "place of refuge."
