A 56-mile-long stretch of three barrier islands on the Outer Banks of North Carolina is established as Cape Lookout National Seashore. It features 160-foot-high Cape Lookout Lighthouse, one of the tallest lighthouses on the East Coast. Overlooking the treacherous 10-mile Lookout Shoals, the lighthouse was built in 1859 (to replace a smaller one built in 1812) and became the model for construction of the other three Outer Banks lighthouses (Cape Hatteras, Bodie Island, and Currituck Beach). The national seashore is accessible by by private boat or public ferry.
