South Dakota's National Scenic Byways and All-American Roads

Native American Scenic Byway - South Dakota

Byway crosses four Sioux Indian Reservations, linking cultural and recreational sites throughout North and South Dakota. Areas of interest along the South Dakota section of the byway include: the Akta Lakota Museum and Cultural Center in Chamberlain, devoted to preserving and promoting Sioux culture; the Lower Brule Indian Reservation and Crow Creek Indian Reservation, where visitors can learn about the history and modern customs of the Sioux; Lake Sharpe, which offers opportunities for water sports, hunting, and fishing; and Fort Pierre, where European traders and Native tribes once traded goods.

How to Get There: The 306-mile South Dakota section of the byway runs from I-90 near Chamberlain and continue across the Missouri River to Oacoma. From there it picks up sections of SD 50, BIA 4, SD 47, BIA 5, BIA 10, SD 1806, US 83, US 14, SD 63, Highway 212, BIA 7, BIA 4, and SD 20, ending at the North Dakota border. The entire byway in both North and South Dakota spans 357 miles.

Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway

Named for South Dakota conservationist, Governor, and U.S. Senator, byway features historic Mount Rushmore and the rugged beauty of the Black Hills. Areas of interest include the Centennial Trail, climbing through 100+ miles of wilderness; Custer State Park, a 73,000-acre wildlife preserve; the Needles Highway, passing among straight stone spires; the Crazy Horse Monument, a mountain-size monument celebrating the life of one of the greatest Native American leaders; Harney Peak, the highest peak east of the Rocky Mountains; and Jewel Cave National Monument, featuring the second largest cave in the United States.

How to Get There: This double loop byway is accessible from Rapid City by following SD 16 southwest toward Keystone or following US 385 north from Hotsprings. The byway includes sections of SD 244, US 16A, SD 87, and SD 89.
