Zion National Park

History and Geology:

Mukuntuweap National Monument was established by President Taft on July 31, 1909. On March 18, 1918, the monument was enlarged and renamed Zion National Monument. By Act of Congress, Zion was established as a national park on November 19, 1919.

The first automobile road was built into the canyon in 1917 and the first lodge was built in 1925. The park's 1.1-mile-long tunnel, cut through solid sandstone, was begun in 1927 and completed in 1930 at a cost of two million dollars. In 1937 the Kolob Canyon region was designated as a national monument and in 1956 it was added to Zion National Park.
