Camping:
Elk Mountain Campground, situated in rolling hills of ponderosa pine forest and prairie, has 75 campsites for tents and recreational vehicles. It is located one mile from the park visitor center. The campground has flush toilets and running water during the summer months. There are no showers, dump stations, or electrical hookups. Campsites are open from April through the end of September and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The backcountry camping area is located in the northwest part of the park. All backcountry campers must obtain a free backcountry use permit at the visitor center or at Centennial Trail access points.
Many area communities, including Custer, Hot Springs, and Rapid City include private campgrounds. Black Hills National Forest, located west and north of the park, has 30 campgrounds with 700 individual sites, including 3 horse camps. Custer State Park, located immediately to the north, includes seven campgrounds.
