Getting to the Park:
Theodore Roosevelt National Park is
located in the badlands of western North Dakota. The park is split into 3
separate units: South Unit, Elkhorn Ranch, and North Unit. The
distance between Medora at the South Unit and the North Unit is 70 miles via
I-94 and US 85.
The South Unit is 135 miles west of Bismarck, North Dakota and 24 miles east of the Montana state line. The entrance to this unit is located in Medora (exits 23 and 27 off I-94) and the Medora Visitor Center is located at the entrance of the park. The Painted Canyon Visitor Center is located 7 miles east of Medora just off I-94 at exit 32.
The Elkhorn Ranch Site, which was the location of Roosevelt's principal home in the badlands, is located 35 miles north of the Medora Visitor Center. To reach the site of the Elkhorn Ranch, take the dirt road going north out of the South Unit. After a drive of roughly 20 miles, you will be in the vicinity of the ranch site. You must ford the river to reach the actual site. The ranch site is also accessible from the west side of the Little Missouri River.
The North Unit is entrance is located 16 miles south of Watford City. From I-94, take US 85 North at the Belfield Exit (Exit 42) and continue north for approximately 50 miles to the park entrance.
By Air: Air service is available into the North Dakota towns of Bismarck, Dickinson and Williston.
By Bus: - Bus transportation via Greyhound is available along I-94. The bus stops in Medora, three blocks from the park entrance. There is no public bus transportation along Highway 85 and to the North Entrance.
By Train: Train service via Amtrak is available into Williston, ND.
