Redwood National and State Parks

Things to Do:

Redwood National and State Parks offers opportunities for a variety of activities depending on your personal interests. If you are approaching the parks from the south, make the Redwood Information Center your first stop. It is located off Highway 101 in the Orick area. View the exhibits and browse publications that tell about the park, its trees, coastline, and related topics. A trail map is available.

If you are approaching the park from the north on Highway 199, stop at the Hiouchi Information Center, which is open during the summer season. In the Crescent City area, the Park Headquarters (located at 1111 Second Street) provides information seven days a week. Nearby attractions include the Battery Point Lighthouse, Del Norte County Museum, and Citizens Dock.

Recreational activities available at the four park units that comprise RNSP include scenic driving, camping, hiking, horseback riding, fishing, swimming, and wildlife viewing. During the summer months 2-2 1/2 hour tidepool or seashore walks are offered at Enderts Beach. An eight-mile coastal drive in the Klamath area of the park winds through stands of redwoods, offering close looks at the Klamath River and outstanding views of the Pacific Ocean.

RNSP contains nearly 200 miles of walking and hiking trails. Among the best hiking trails include the Redwood Creek Trail, an 8.5-mile path to Tall Trees Grove, where the world's tallest trees grow on the flats of Redwood Creek. The Lady Bird Johnson self-guiding loop trail threads through mature forest to the grove and the site where the First Lady dedicated the park in 1968. Although RNSP is best known for its redwoods, the 70 miles of Coastal Trail in the parks offers the adventurous hiker the opportunity to explore beaches and tidepools, bluffs, grasslands, and wet forests.

American Indian dance demonstrations presented by members of the Tolowa and the Yurok tribes are performed in RNSP every summer season.
