Mesa Verde National Park

History:

Mesa Verde was established by Congress as a national park on June 29, 1906 to preserve the archeological sites which "Pre-Columbian Indians" built on the mesa tops and in the alcoves of a score of rugged canyons. It was the first and, to date, the only cultural National Park set aside in the National Park System and was designated a World Heritage Site on September 6, 1978. There are over four thousand known archeological sites in Mesa Verde National Park. Approximately 600 of these are cliff dwellings. Only a few of these sites have been excavated.
