The Herbert Hoover National Historic Site was authorized by Congress on August 12, 1965, "to preserve the significant historical properties associated with the life of Herbert Hoover in West Branch." The Hoover family purchased the cottage in 1935 and restored it to its original location and appearance. The Hoover Birthplace Society managed the site until it was transferred to the United States in 1962. After Hoover's death in 1964, support for memorializing Hoover grew. It includes 186-acres of land in historic West Branch, Iowa.
