Big Bend National Park Travel Planner

Getting to the Park:

Big Bend National Park headquarters is located in southwest Texas, hundreds of miles from the nearest cities and transportation hubs. Three paved roads lead to the park: 1) U.S. 385 from Marathon to the north entrance (69 miles); 2) State Route 118 from Alpine to the west entrance (103 miles); and 3) Ranch Road 170 from Presidio to Study Butte, and then State Route 118 to the west entrance (92 miles). Distances between towns and services can be considerable. Always be sure you have plenty of gas, oil, food, and water for your trip. The park has four camper stores, but supply and selection can be limited. There are also small stores in the communities outside the park. The road to the Chisos Basin has steep grades and sharp turns. It is not recommended for RVs over 24 feet or trailers over 20 feet in length.

There is no public transportation to or from the park. Amtrak provides service to Alpine; bus service is available to Alpine and Marathon. The nearest airports are in Midland, TX (230 miles to the northeast) and El Paso, TX (325 miles to the northwest).
