Things to Do:

Andrew Johnson Memorial at the National Cemetery

The Andrew Johnson National Historic Site honors the life and work of the 17th President of the United States and preserves his two homes and grave site. Begin your tour at the visitor center, which includes information, exhibits, and the tailor shop that Johnson bought in 1831. Across the street is an early home of the Johnsons with exhibits.

A block and a half up Main Street is the Homestead, where the Johnsons lived beginning in 1851. Furnished with original family possessions, 10 rooms are open to visitors. Less than half a mile away is the national cemetery where Andrew and Eliza Johnson are buried with other family members. The marble memorial includes likenesses of the Constitution and the Bible; an American Eagle perches on top.

Tours of the Andrew Johnson Homestead are given hourly on the half-hour beginning at 9:30 a.m. and ending at 4:30 p.m. There is not a 12:30 p.m. tour. Tickets are required and are obtained at the Visitor Center up to 15 minutes prior to the tour. Special events include Memorial Day Program on May 30th of each year, commemorative birthday program on December 29th, and Christmas tour of the Homestead.
