After 34 hours of fighting, the Union surrendered Fort Sumter to the Confederates in April of 1861, and from 1863 to 1865, the Confederates here withstood a 22 month siege by Union forces. During this time, most of the fort was reduced to brick rubble. South Carolina's Fort Sumter was declared a national monument in 1948.

The other three forts that were listed as possible answers are all units of the National Park Service:

Fort Scott National Historic Site in Kansas was a U.S. Army frontier fort in the 1840-50s.

Fort Raleigh National Historic Site in North Carolina was the site of an early English settlement (1585-1587).

Fort Union National Monument in New Mexico was a key supply point on the Santa Fe Trail.
