Utah's Best State Parks
Antelope Island State
Park
Located in Syracuse, park is accessible via exit 335 off I-15, driving west along Antelope
Drive which takes you to the 7.5 mile causeway. A visitor center, located on the island,
offers a
history of the Great Salt Lake, Antelope Island and many other interesting
facts about the park. Camping is
available on the island; reservations are recommended, but not required. The campground is fairly primitive offering picnic tables and chemical
toilets; group camping is also
available. There are
many activities available on the island, including hiking, mountain biking, sightseeing, horseback riding and picnicking.
Events such as the Annual Buffalo Round-up held in late October; tours
of the historic Fielding Garr Ranch, star gazing parties, and mountain bike
events are held throughout the year. Buffalo
Point concession services offers buffalo burgers and other food and drinks.
Dead Horse Point State
Park
Located 11 miles northwest of Moab on US 191 and then 23 miles southwest on
Utah 313 to the end of the highway. Dead
Horse Point sits high on a desert plateau overlooking Canyonlands National
Park and the Colorado River. Activities
in the park include hiking, photography, geology, and wildlife viewing. Camping is available in the park, reservations are not
required, but highly recommended. The campground has drinking water, modern restrooms, covered
picnic tables and barbeque grills. There
are no showers available and no fires are allowed. There is a visitors center with an information section, auditorium,
souvenirs, and restrooms. All
facilities are ADA accessible.
Wasatch Mountain State
Park
Located seven miles west of Heber on Highway
113, approximately 50
miles from Salt Lake City. To
access the park take I-80 east to US 40 or Heber exit. Travel about 17 miles to Heber, take Highway 113 west to
Midway. Follow the signs to the
park. Camping, golfing (36-holes),
snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing are a few of the activities at the park. Drinking
water, modern restrooms, hot showers, sewage disposal, covered picnic tables,
barbeque grills, and fire pits are available. The
ranch-style chalet at Wasatch Mountain is very popular for family and company parties. It
can be reserved one year in advance from your planned outing. Wasatch Mountain
hosted the biathlon, cross-country skiing and Nordic Combined at the 2002
Winter Olympics.
