South Dakota's Best State Parks

South Dakota has 42 state parks, recreation areas and nature areas, each with its own personality and unique qualities. Selecting just a couple of these parks as “must see” parks is an almost impossible task. To help me make my selections, I decided to look at three of the main reasons people visit South Dakota’s state parks. The first would be to experience wildlife in its natural habitat -- to experience nature at its finest. The second is to learn about the history of an area, a state and our country. And the third reason is recreation -- to have a relaxing and enjoyable time in the great outdoors. So using those criteria, I have selected the following three locations as South Dakota’s “must see” parks.

The most popular park in South Dakota known for the wildlife experience is Custer State Park, located in the Black Hills of western South Dakota. Covering 73,000 acres, Custer State Park is one of the largest state parks in the nation. The park is famous for the buffalo that wander the park. Other often-seen park residents include the begging burros, prairie dogs, pronghorn, white-tail and mule deer, elk, mountain goats and bighorn sheep. The scenic drives through the park are breathtaking, and park visitors are never disappointed. Visitors who want to stay in the park have several options. There are a number of campgrounds, lodges and cabins available to the weary traveler.

For an historical adventure, Fort Sisseton State Park is the perfect choice. This prairie outpost was established in northeast South Dakota following the Minnesota Indian Uprising of 1862. With its 14 original buildings and telltale signs of past structures, this historic site is one of the best-preserved prairie posts in the nation. In addition to its historic significance, the park’s modern campground provides a quiet stop for area travelers. If you want a more primitive experience, you can rent a tipi or a military Sibley tent.

For the visitor looking for sun, sand, water and trails, Lewis and Clark State Recreation Area, located in southeastern South Dakota, is the place. This park offers almost 400 campsites and cabins, hot showers, electric hookups, paved pads, boat ramps, playgrounds, clean sand beaches, hiking and biking trails, all located on the great Missouri River. Those who want this total outdoor experience without roughing it can stay in the motel or in one of the cabins managed by the Lewis and Clark Resort.

These three parks are great, but please don’t limit yourself to these choices. The remaining 39 parks are also amazing “must see” areas that travelers looking for the nature experience, historical exploration, or fun in the sun are not going to want to miss. We look forward to having you visit and enjoy our parks.
