Kentucky's Best State Parks
The
Kentucky State Park System maintains more resort lodges than any other park
system in the nation -- 17 in all. The park system also comprises another 33
day-use parks and historic sites.
The
Western Kentucky region is known for two massive man-made lakes -- Kentucky Lake
and Lake Barkley. These wide, shallow lakes provide outstanding recreational
opportunities. The region boasts three state resort park, among them Kentucky
Dam Village State Resort Park. The park lodge underwent an extensive
renovation in recent years. The result was a dramatic nautical look for its
lobby and 72 freshly redecorated lodge rooms. The park also features 72 cottages
and a campground with 221 paved sites.
In
Eastern Kentucky about 50 miles southeast of Lexington, Kentucky's
second-largest city, is Natural Bridge State Resort Park. The park's most
notable feature isn't man-made, it is a 78-foot long sandstone arch -- Natural
Bridge. The view from atop the arch is breathtaking, embracing the wooded
hillsides that stretch for miles. The
park maintains a 35-room lodge and 10 cottages, as well as two campgrounds.

James Audubon State Park
in Henderson along the Ohio River is named for the
famed 19th naturalist and ornithologist. Audubon lived here for a number of
years. His legacy is reflected in a modern museum that contains invaluable
Audubon artwork, memorabilia and publications.
