California's Best State Parks
This is California State Parks Director Rusty Areias' list of the top state parks to see in California:
- Big Basin Redwoods State
Park (Santa Cruz County) - This park was the beginning
of the save-the-redwoods movement in California. We're celebrating the
centennial of the park's acquisition in 2002.
- Anza-Borrego Desert State
Park (San Diego County) - At 600,000 acres, this is
the largest state park in California, accounting for almost half the acreage of
the entire state park system.
- Hearst
Castle (San Luis Obispo County) - Built by newspaper magnate William
Randolph Hearst, this historic site was deeded to the State and opened to the
public 41 years ago. It features a world-renowned collection of art.
- Huntington State
Beach (Orange County) - This is one of the most popular state
parks, and is famous for its role in surfing history, thanks to the Beach Boys
and Jan and Dean.
- Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park (Humboldt and Del Norte Counties) - Prairie Creek is a 14,000-acre sanctuary of old growth coast redwood that has been designated as a World Heritage Site.
