Aerial view of Nike Missile Base.
Superintendent Dan Kimball has announced that the National Park Service has opened the historic Nike Hercules Missile Base HM-69, located in Everglades National Park, to the public for the second season.
This tour was offered in 2009 and was so popular that the park has expanded the scheduled tours to twice a day during the week and once a day on weekends. Ranger guided tours bring park visitors through one of the best preserved relics of the Cold War in Florida. This historical site is a wonderful example of the Nation's missile defense system close to Cuba and remains virtually the same as it was in 1979.
Interpretive tours will be held every week day at 10 a.m. and 2 pm and on Saturday and Sundaty at 2 p.m. through March 28, 2009. Reserve a space by calling 305-242-7700.
